We’re already more than a month into the 2021 MLB season and we have some sense of which players will dominate this year. The race for Cy Young is heating up and a couple of stand-out candidates have already appeared. At the moment, the pair of pitchers from New York are in the driving seat for the coveted award. Gerrit Cole from the Yankees is currently the odds-on favorite to be named the best pitcher in the American League. Mets’ hurler Jacob deGrom is leading the race in the National League.

Before the start of the season, C0le was favored to win the award at +400. After some excellent performances, the odds have moved even further in the favor of the right-handed ace. At the moment, Cole is priced at +160. In his second year with the team, he has a 1.43 ERA and a 0.72 WHIP in six starts. The Yankees are 4-2 when Cole starts. He has lasted at least 6 innings all but one start and hasn’t allowed more than earned runs yet. Another factor going his way as a potential Cy Young winner is the Yankees’ fearsome batting order. It should allow him to rack up a decent number of wins for the season.

Cleveland’s Shane Bieber, the reigning AL Cy Young winner is priced at -325 to win again. This year, he regressed a bit after the fantastic 2020 season but is still putting in decent performances. He has an ERA of 2.76 and a WHIP of 0.99 in six starts so far. Those are very respectable numbers but he has a lot of ground to make up if he’s to beat Cole to the award.

In the National League, the race for the award seems to be somewhat less exciting. Jacob deGrom is proving to be the best pitcher in baseball and is already the minus-money favorite to win the Cy Young award. He’s been so dominant in the first month that bookies have moved him from the preseason odds of +400 to -120. deGrom started 5 times so far and has been almost perfect with 0.51 ERA and 0.56 WHIP. The Mets are 2-3 straight up with him as a starter but it shouldn’t damage his chances too much. The lack of offensive support has followed him throughout his career as a Met. The right-hander has already won the Cy Young in 2018 and 2019 despite the Mets being barely over .500 in his starts.

The Dodgers’ offseason acquisition and the current Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer is the second favorite to win the award. After opening the season at +600, the price on Bauer to repeat has moved +1500. His stats are nearly as good as last season with a 2.44 ERA, 0.79 WHIP. However, with the season deGrom is having, it’s hard to imagine anyone else winning the accolades unless he gets injured.
