Baseball Betting – Renteria Returns to San Diego, This Time as Cubs’ Skipper

The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres are two teams that need all the help they can get. Both of them have had problems scoring runs, and they most likely fall into that category of teams that are “building for the future.” But there is a here and now, and Rick Renteria, the rookie manager for the Cubs, is excited about coming back to San Diego, where he served as a coach for five years. So he will lead his team into action at Petco Park as baseball betting action begins at 10:10 PM ET.

The Cubs are currently the last-place team in the National League Central, with a 16-28 record. In fact, they have the worst record in the league at the moment, and are 10.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the standings. San Diego is in fourth place in the National League West, with a 21-26 record, but they trail the San Francisco Giants by eight games. They have lost three games in a row, so they certainly welcome the Cubs, who have posted a 6-15 record on the road.

These Cubs traveled to the West Coast following a 13-inning defeat suffered at the hands of the New York Yankees on Wednesday, so they aren’t in the best of spirits. However, in the game before that, they dealt Masahiro Tanaka, New York’s sensational Japanese import, his first loss of the season, and indeed, his first loss since the 2012 season (he had gone undefeated in 24 decisions last year in Japan).

In the baseball betting lines that have been posted on this game by the people at BetAnySports, the Padres are favored:

San Diego Padres (Stults – L) -142

Chicago Cubs (Arrieta – R) +132

Under 7 Runs -125

Over 7 Runs +105

San Diego has scored fewer runs than any team in the major leagues, and those offensive deficiencies came to light again on Wednesday as they were shut out by a 2-0 score by the Minnesota Twins in interleague action. On Thursday night they will send Eric Stults to the mound. Stults has a 4.50 ERA, but he has improved from his previous figure over his last couple of starts. Considering the explosiveness of the Colorado Rockies, his last outing, in which he was lifted with two outs in the seventh inning after giving up three runs, was not so bad.

The Cubs will go with Jake Arrieta, who has had three starts on the season, none of which have gone beyond the sixth inning. As BetAnySports customers know, he’s had trouble with his control, and in his last outing he walked five batters in just four innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. Arrieta has not faced the Padres since the 2010 season, when he was with the Baltimore Orioles.

Renteria coached under current San Diego manager Bud Black, but he won’t be facing his former mentor in this game, as Black got permission to miss this contest to attend his daughter’s college graduation. That won’t make it any easier, as the Cubs of only won three of their last 10 meetings with this Padres crew.
