MLB Baseball Betting at Get That Bet — Can Despaigne Continue Good Fortune for Padres?

Is a pitchers’ duel expected when the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves meet up on Saturday night? We would suggest that is probably the case. The Braves will be sending an All-Star pitcher to the mound against a rookie from the Padres who has been nothing short of sensational. This MLB baseball betting action will get underway at 7:10 PM ET at Turner Field in Atlanta.

The Braves have a record of 55-48, which puts them in second place in the National League East, 2.5 games behind the Washington Nationals. The Padres are 46-56, and they are out of the playoff race (10.5 games behind the Giants in the NL West), so there is that seemingly never-ending talk of “the future,” although there are some young pitchers on this staff that give every indication that there could indeed BE a bright future.

One of those pitchers is Odrisamer Despaigne, who came from Cuba this season and has not yet had a bad outing. He is currently 2-1 with a 1.31 ERA. But the Braves have someone formidable to put against him; a Colombian import named Julio Teheran, who comes to the table with a 9-6 record and 2.64 ERA. Collectively, these right-handers have a WHIP ratio (walks plus hits per innings pitched) under 1.00.

In the MLB baseball betting lines that have been established on this game by the folks over at Get That Bet, the Braves are rather big favorites:

Atlanta Braves (Teheran – R) -200
San Diego Padres (Despaigne – R) +170

Under 7 Runs -130
Over 7 Runs +110

Don’t look now, but San Diego has started to win some games. In fact, the Padres have now won five of their last six contests. They took two out of three games against the Mets, then two out of three against the Cubs. Okay, those were not contending teams, but these are the games the Padres have to win. They defeated the Braves behind rookie pitcher Jesse Hahn on Friday, scoring a 5-2 victory. It may be a shock to MLB bettors at Get That Bet that for a team a team that has averaged 3.1 runs per game, the Padres have now tallied 26 runs in the last three contests.

On Saturday night they are going up against another rookie pitcher. Odrisamer Despaigne is a Cuban defector who didn’t exactly touch off a bidding war when he came over. In fact, he was signed to a minor league contract by the Padres. But he worked his way through the bush leagues very rapidly and was brought to the big club in June. He has made five starts, going at least six innings in each of those outings, and not yet permitting more than two runs. This is all the more amazing when you consider that he had a 7.61 ERA in Triple-A ball. Has the whole thing been deceiving? MLB baseball bettors are indeed curious about it.

Despaigne has a delivery that is hard to get used to, and that is probably one of the reasons he has had much success thus far. But the idea some Get That Bet patrons may have had that he would get routinely pounded the second time around by opponents didn’t seem to hold much water against the Giants on July 5, as he held them to two hits over six innings after blanking them in seven frames in his major league debut (June 23). He is not overpowering, however (just 17 K’s), so he will have to get the Braves to hit the ball on the ground.
